Review of Unbreakable (2000) by Sidney S — 11 May 2013
Riding high off the success of the Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan crafts another stellar thriller film that is pure genius, and unlike anything you've seen. Unbreakable takes comic book mythology and brings it into a real world setting with some supernatural tones that help keep you on the edge of your seat and asking more questions as the film progresses on.
Bruce Willis again as Shymalon's lead actor and he excels. Willis as well as being an action superstar is a very talented and underrated dramatic actor. He portrays the sole survivor of an outrageous train disaster only to discover via the leading of Elijah Prince played by Samuel L. Jackson that he has never been sick or injured a day in his life. This leads to the possible revelation that David (Willis) is "unbreakable" and quite possible a real life superhero as Eljah explains. Elijah's obsessive nature eventually brings David to the realization and embraces what he is upon learning the terrible truth in a great twist ending only Shymalon can deliver.
The film is very well built its dark, very low key in lighting and the questions arise as to is Elijah's theory true or is this obsessive man really dangerous. Elijah's theory begins taking over David's life as well as effecting his personal life. Willis performance is great and strong. I really liked how unpredictable this film was, the twists , the performances of course, Shymalon's directing style as well as the element of supernatural that gave it a mysterious and darker tone. Unbreakable is a very enticing and captivating thriller.
