The kids were well casted but I had some problems with it. It resorts to violence in a lot of conflicts as well going against authority simply because they're kids so don't listen to adults. I thought it sent a bad message.
Even the "non bad" adults in the film, with the exception of Wilmer, were portrayed as sad pathetic creatures.
