Review of Umrao Jaan (2006) by Markye H — 02 May 2008
Based on the 1915 book about the life of an actual Lucknow courtesan. I liked the 1998 film too, but this version has much better production values. The dancing is very good. The slightly odd subtitle language (and emphasis on poetry in the story) leads me to beleive the dialogue contains a lot of pretty verse that is lost in translation for English-speaking viewers.
