Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Melissa B — 23 Jan 2007
Directed by Vittorio De Sica.
Starring Carlo Battisti, Maria Pia Casilio, Lina Gennari, Elena Rea.
How would you sell a story about a decrepit old man with nothing in the world but his dog and an apartment he?s already bound to lose? Tell a friend its about life, in all its honesty and the little things that make its way trickling down a narrow path toward each one?s own lonely end. ?Umberto D? (played in the titular role by Carlo Battisti) is such an affecting movie, gallantly treating the imbalances of society with an understanding hand, unforgettable in its entirety and one of the best dramas ever made.
Best Scene: The dog and the hat.
