Review of Ultraviolet (2006) by Gary S — 20 Feb 2010
Ultraviolet starts of with "I was born into a world you may not understand" which becomes one huge understatement. The audience can learn about a dystopia or an alternate universe or even a futuristic plot, but the film plows on - mesmerizing the audience with beautiful (Really, quite stunning) special effects and action sequences, but never pauses to clue us in why the hemophage race exists.
Furthermore, there's little developed with the characters. While their motivations can be reasoned, information is ultimately lacking. Her character is purely her motivation, which only speaks of one side. There is no time for the audience to establish an emotional connection with the character, making her endeavors none of our interest. Similarly, plot twists lose their... twisty-ness.
Now, the plot itself is a patchwork of ideas - Kill Bill, foremost in mind ("REVENGE!"). Other elements make little or no sense at all. ("I'm called a vampire, but I exhibit no such traits" or "I'm dying, but I'm able to take down 14 trained men at once!").Completely predictable, or rather dull.
Overall, the movie gets two stars from me, for being absolutely beautiful visually. Gone and wasted the budget, didn't they, but I wouldn't mind seeing this in HD or Bluray or whatever. The parts that do matter in the movie, however, were lacking, but the movie wasn't completely unwatchable.
Bottom Line: There's no reason to watch it. Don't waste an hour or so.
