Review of Ultraviolet (2006) by Stephanie F — 31 Mar 2012
Stylish, and not much more.
If there's one thing to be said about this movie it's that it's beyond stylish.
The Story: Well, there's not much too it, all you really need to know is that in the future there's a disease that causes people to turn into vampires. The vampires want to kill the humans, and the humans the vampires, blah blah blah... The story actually revolves around Violet (obviously the heroin of the story), escorting a child through a futuristic city because he might hold the answer to all of her problems. While all this might sound like an entertaining story, it's just misleading. It's story actually goes pretty much nowhere and nowhere fast. But, it is pretty. The bright colors, the obvious CG, the fast pace, and the oh so sexy Milla Jovovich, all make it somewhat entertaining to watch or at least look at. It's just that it's beyond an acquired taste, well all that and the fact that the costume design ranges anywhere from sleek and sexy to INCREDIBLY GOOFY! I mean really, you can't even take the main villain seriously for the fact that he's got a stupid little contraption shoved up his nose... This falls well into the category of "love it or hate it", unless you're one of the few, you'll more than likely hate it. But if you're looking for a comic-book world full of strange choreography and interesting design it might prove to be an interesting rental... Just don't expect it to be the next Matrix.
The Cast: Milla Jovovich... There's more but they're not really worth mentioning... Milla Jovovich is Violet, she's a vampire herself but with a troubled past that makes her want to do nothing but help those in trouble. Not the most original character, nor the best performance, but did you really have high expectations for her?... Really, did you?... She's decent... As for all the other acting in the film, it's mediocre at best and pretty lack luster and generic.
One to Five Scale: 3.
It's obviously a case of style over substance, and we all know I'm kind of a style whore when it comes to movies, so maybe that's why it's a three. No story and bad acting makes for a bad experience, but the pictures are fun to look at... If there's absolutely nothing else to watch give this a try... And although I've never seen it, I think most people would probably do best to skip this one and watch Aeon Flux.
Tyler.
