I am sure it would have made a much better novel. Most of the special effects sequences were lifted from Battle Beyond the Stars and The Abyss. There is more corny dialog and nonsensical information that you can shake a stick at.
This is a gem for hosting bad movie night with your friends. Ow, my eyes....
