Review of Udta Punjab (2016) by Chait M — 05 Jul 2016
A necessary and hard hitting film that absolutely nails the delivery of it's message. Haunting and chilling at many moments with dark humour introduced at unexpectedly throughout it's run time - this movie entertains and you never notice the 2.5 hour run time. The acting is top notch - with a grounded performance from Kareena Kapoor, absolutely fantastic performance by Shahid Kapoor (continuing with his great acting role in Haider) and break through performances for both Alia (never having played such a role) and Diljit (making his Bollywood debut). The screenplay has to be appreciated for building a character arch for all it's 4 protaganists.
This is an absolutely fantastic film by Abhishek Chaubey and you see inspiration he has derived from the works of Martin Scorsese and Vishal Bhardwaj. Shouldn't be missed - definitely worth the price of admission in cinemas and hope to see more films like these coming out of Bollywood soon.
