Review of U Turn (1997) by Dustin G — 16 Dec 2011
Oliver Stone is certainly a love him or hate him filmmaker. The electric, razorwire look of his films makes them unique but also gives the films a hallucinogenic quality. I personally love this style and think it enhances the subject matter of films like Any Given Sunday, Natural Born Killers and this one.
U-Turn is quite simply Sean Penn having the worst day of his life in a nowhere town that time forgot in the Arizona desert. It's FILLED with amazing performances from amazing actors, even Jennifer Lopez back when she was still showing promise as an actress before she made a joke out of herself.
One sick and twisted plot turn after another keeps the film moving at high speed and while the entirety of the story is completely unbelievable, you do get the feeling as you spend more time in Superior, that it could only happen there.
Not quite a tour de force, but an impressive kinetic flick nonetheless.
