Review of Tyrannosaur (2011) by Lorne G — 25 Sep 2011
A deeply personal and incredibly upsetting debut film from revered British actor Paddy Considine, sees Mullan's brutal alcoholic search for redemption through the salvation of charity worker, Olivia Colman's Hannah and her equally complex and bitter existence.
Considine's work avoids flogging social statements and low-budget, handheld camera work in favour of steady locked out shots of his phenomenal cast and a script that always lets the incredibly dark moments of intimacy and debasement arrive suddenly and shockingly, admitting slight hyper-realism and heavy (and occasionally clumsy) symbolism.
Unflinching and at times, dangerously blunt, Tyrannosaur is yet another example of an emerging British talent to be reckoned with and fine example of focused debut filmmaking.
