Review of Tyrannosaur (2011) by Bob L — 17 Oct 2011
A simple story of a man with anger problems from a deprived estate who has a strange friendship formed with middle class, charity-shop-working christian lady, and the realization that both of them have preconceptions of each other that make them oblivious to what they have in common.
Even her abusive husband misjudges their friendship, and while the actual storyline is simple and a little obvious, the performances here are incredibly strong and draw you in. Peter Mullan is good, as expected, but Olivia Colman is a surprise as this is a million miles away from her usual comedic roles.
The direction on this is fittingly harsh too, and it very simply drops you into an environment that refuses to compromise from the animal abuse at the start, through the anti social behavior and child abuse of the surrounding characters, and gives a backdrop to Colmans character that highlights her naivety.
Grim, depressing, but amazingly engrossing.
