Review of Tyrannosaur (2011) by The D — 08 Dec 2011
A gritty & emotional story brought to life by Paddy Considine.
Peter Mullan plays Joseph. A man seeingly on course to self destruct. He stumbles from pub to pub & brawl to brawl. Alone in the world apart from the odd drinking buddy his short temper & intolerance for the living world it seems like only a matter of time before he is imprisoned or buried.
That is until he crashes into a charity shop & befriends Christian Hannah(Colman) she takes him under her wing praying for him to be shown the way out of his predicament.
Hannah, of course, has her own issues. A very unhappy and violent, often sick, marriage to James(Marsan) she too is looking for a way out from her homelife hell.
Mullan is very good as the bullish no nonsense Joseph but it really is Olivia Colman who shines. Her portrayal as the battered downtrodden wife is quite remarkable. The pair really are centre stage with limited back up & really draw you into their plight. It has violence but only in small part & it isn't graphic.
The story progresses with some turns that you might not expect & certainly does not wander into twee or unnecessary feel good areas.
Very similar to Gary Oldman's Nil By Mouth Tyrannosaur is well worth of any awards coming its way.
