Review of Tyrannosaur (2011) by Jamie D — 12 Feb 2012

What a film! Very brutal and disturbing (you'll know the scenes when you see them), they really hit you where it hurts. A wonderful story though as we follows Joseph, a man with certain extreme anger issues replacing his other emotions. The story follows him as he walks through redemption, after meeting a charity shop worker named Hannah. All this has been covered in Considine's 2007 short film Dog Altogether. He stated that he wanted to carry on the story and follow the character of Hannah, to see what her life is like and how the relationship between her and Joseph unfolds. What is revealed is a beautiful piece of cinema that everyone involved in should be proud of 100%. Each shot is done with careful attention and you really feel like you're interacting with the characters. Peter Mullan is extraordinary as Joseph, playing it to emotionally scarring effect for the audience. Eddie Marsan is turning into one of my favourite actors, here playing a truly horrible and disgusting man who makes you shiver when he is seen on screen. His presence manages to linger throughout. Olivia Colman is of course the stand-out performance here, a real tour-de-force! The most distressing and emotional sequence is when she breaks down towards the end of the film, revealing details about her husband. Really gripping and upsetting.

A British masterpiece, Paddy Considine proves himself to be a ground-breaking director aswell as an incredible actor. Amazing.
