Review of Tyrannosaur (2011) by Heidi S — 04 Apr 2012
This is a very different film to the one I had geared myself up for. There is a constant undercurrent of unease which accentuates the violent scenes but the violence is not overblown. Thankfully this is a film which is lead by characters, Hannah and Joseph are both fully formed characters who grow (sometimes in unpredictable ways) as the film progresses.
Olivia Colman is superb, she really seems to have a talent for dramatic roles based on this evidence so hopefully she will continue the good work. Her performance conveys a tremendous sense of vulnerability but it is never weak and despite her situation it gives the impression of hope.
The strengths in Peter Mullen's performance are ultimately the understated partsrather than his more bravado moments. In fact despite the apparent differences it is the similarities that bring the two characters closer to each other.
This is grim and unflinching at times but it is also heartfelt and rewarding and it deserves to be seen. A strong directorial debut from Considine.
