Review of Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys (2008) by Garrett S — 26 Nov 2009
This isn't my favorite Tyler Perry movie. One of his signature movies is giving the audience a very serious subject that the main characters have to deal with and then switching straight to comedy.
Usually, he has Madea to help him, but not this time. He tries to throw in Kathy Bates for comic relief but there's only one problem with that. MADEA CAN'T BE WHITE. It is also kind of hard to like Kathy Bates when she switches from being a lovable southern lady that you want to hug to an evil work woman that you want to slap.
As much as I respect Tyler Perry, I have to say the script on this one was kind of weak. Given that it had a stellar cast, I don't think the actors were given anything special to work with. What I did like about this was the great performances from Tyler Perry and Taraji P.
Henson. Of course Tyler would be perfect(since it's his movie and he knows exactly how things should work), but I feel that Ms. Henson was the only other cast member that brought his vision to the screen.
Overall, this movie was decent, but I think it could have been better for a Tyler Perry movie.
