Review of Tying the Knot (2004) by Mario M — 15 Nov 2008
The first half of this film, which focuses on the history of marriage, displays true potential and offers true depth as a documentary. The second half, which seems to focus more on case studies of gay men and women wronged by current marriage legislation, does indeed provide strong emotional appeals, but lacks the same rigor and promise of the film's first forty minutes.
In all, it's an interesting film, but that's about all I can say. "Tying the Knot," had it followed the same course presented in its opening act, might have had the potential to become the definitive documentary on marriage in general, and gay marriage in particular, but its tonal shift and over-reliance on just a couple emotional stories undermined that potential.
