At the heart of the doc, there's two (heartbreaking) stories. One elderly gay couple who lived together with their 3 children. One of them died and he left his will to his spouse but his will was challenged by his cousins and they won so the surviving spouse and their children had to vacate their ranch.
The lesbian couple were in the police force. One of them died while on duty, and the surviving spouse didn't get any benefit from the state because their union is not recognised. After legal battles and even support/testimonies from her friends, she still lost.
