Review of Two Weeks Notice (2002) by Amanda C — 04 Nov 2018
"Two Weeks Notice" follows a lawyer who spends her free time protecting the destruction of older buildings around her, only to end up getting a job from the man who likes to destroy those same buildings.
Starring Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock, the two have a banter throughout the film that makes it difficult not to laugh out loud. Bullock's slightly uptight Lucy has to guide Grant's lost puppy of a character that is George in a way that makes it apparent by the end that the two are not quite the same without each other.
It takes what could be a cheesy romantic comedy and makes it a little more realistic and believable. The story made me feel good, as it's endearing to see the "opposites attract" dynamic play out.
It made me think that, at least in this case, they actually could! Written by Marc Lawrence, the banter was my favorite part of the film. Having directed the film as well, Lawrence was able to expand off of that with Bullock's comedic bits where she falls down the stairs on the boat and runs into the tree in her office.
It is that situational comedy that made me enjoy the film that much better! Edited by Susan E. Morse, the pacing of the film felt very easy and fluid. As the cinematographer, Laszlo Kovacs paints New York out to be a bright, sunny, and beautiful place to live.
In terms of the audio and sound design, I felt that the film sounded great and was consistent throughout. There didn't at any point seem to be any disconnects in the sound. The production value was great, it was certainly professional work and was really well-done throughout.
Personally, I didn't want anything done differently. The film proves to be one of my favorites of the genre because I enjoy what they did with it!
