Review of Two Lovers (2008) by Nathaniel H — 29 Oct 2009
Two Lovers might not be the most exhilarating cinema of the year (James Gray's direction can be accurately criticized for dawdling at times and being a little pretentious), but what an absorbing and haunting vision this is.
It has the quality of reading a terrific fictional novel (always a favorable characteristic) and plays like movies from the golden era of the 1970s did. Joaquin Phoenix gives what could be his last performance now that he's retired from acting.
What a shame. He gives a totally unmawkish and unromanticized portrayal of an artsy loner's depression. There are moments in this picture as astonishing as any I've ever seen at the movies, but the highest praise I can give Two Lovers is that it's the rare film to end exactly where I wanted it to, yet still surprise me.
