Review of Two Lovers (2008) by Lety C — 01 Feb 2011
After seeing this movie, I tried to get a sense for why Joaquin Phoenix seemed to go off the deep end and do that horrifically self-gratifying mockumenatry, 'I'm Still Here'. Yeah, this movie isn't so great, but it's not artistically insufficient.
Phoenix is a very talented actor (see also, 'Gladiator', 'Walk the Line'), but this movie only partially takes advantage of his talents. Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man 2) plays the part of mistress/emotional whore a little too well.
Still, it seems lacking. The character study aspect that focuses on Phoenix's character is quite good, but the additional premise is a little shaky. Director James Gray (We Own the Night) makes the movie look good, but can never really overcome the patchy material.
