Review of Two Lovers (1928) by Ian M — 05 Dec 2009
Talky relationship dramas about kids playacting at being grown-ups rarely get it right - see Closer, XX/XY, Little Children, We Don't Live Here Anymore, Your Friends & Neighbors... or rather, don't see any of those; see this one instead.
I entered Two Lovers with zero expectations and left it quietly devastated. It just does everything right: Gray's writing and direction are first-rate, Phoenix gives by far his best performance to date, and Paltrow gives her first truly strong one.
A very pleasant surprise.
