Review of Two Lovers (1928) by Ben C — 18 Jun 2011
Two Lovers is a film about love and the choices that come when one is searching for it. Essentially Leonard (Phoenix) must choose between the woman that has captured his heart and imagination and the woman that loves him and will provide happiness.
His choices cause him to be caught between excitement and stability. Add to that his mentally imbalanced nature and it's easy to see where the difficulty that will develop. Luckily Phoenix is more than adequate at portraying the character's melancholic life and his strange behavior.
His portrayal is nuanced and authentic which allows the audience to feel for the character rather than dislike his sometimes uncaring demeanor. As much as Leonard struggles to be his own person, this conflicted and dysfunctional man has his choices made for him through fate and ends up where he needed to be all along.
The supporting cast adds to Phoenix's performance and delivers a compelling drama about one man's search for love and happiness.
