Review of Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) by Gerry V — 26 Dec 2007
The best time to watch this movie is as summer is ending. It a race-for-pink-slips flick with great cinematography. Torpor = coolness in this. James Taylor and Dennis Wilson are unbelievably good, no doubt Monte Hellman found bizarre ways to pull great performances out of these two stoned rock star ciphers from the early 70's.
A film with something to say about men and friendship and car culture. It is unfortunate that this movie features unrealistic women, a problem that plagued other similar 70's flicks like Five Easy Pieces.
No one watches this film just once, partly because it can cause you to fall asleep but also coz it has some very cool sequences that one returns to.
