Review of Two for the Road (1967) by K D — 30 Sep 2008
Initially I had a hard time grasping what exactly was occurring in the film, but that soon faded and I really found this to be quite an original, mature story and very enjoyable at that. Not only does the film feature the typical get-to-know-you, heads over heels romance, but it shows what happens after those films end.
... marriage, kids, temptation, fights, REAL LIFE! I loved the transitions between the, from my count, at least five storylines emerging throughout the film. The characters change, and it just seemed so real.
The settings changed, lost their innocence and charm just like the romance seemed to fade throughout each progressive storyline. I thought both Hepburn and Finney gave great performances, and truly gave life to each scene.
The writing for this film was superb, along with the cinematography and direction. I also found the blatant sexual innuendos and "b" words to be very lively as well. I think this film could stand up to anything released today and is a film anyone today could truly enjoy and should see as it really takes a very real look at marriage.
Great film!
