Review of Two Days, One Night (2014) by Peter F — 30 Dec 2014
The Dardenne brothers latest film is an affecting and sentimental drama, that is also unfathomably a bit underwhelming. While it would seem heartless to call this film a disappointment due to it's nobel message, and relevant subject matter, there's also a sense that the film is a bit repetitive, and under-written.
Also, it lacks the true emotional engagement of their best work. While necessarily realistic, and carried by Cotillard's most tumultuous performance to date, Two Days, One Night isn't quite the masterpiece that Cannes heralded it to be, but a fine slice of contemporary neo-realism as well.
