Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Russell B — 23 Jun 2008
Well, er... yes. The more oneiric segments of this prequel have a similar appeal to Lost Highway's more overt brand of "I have no idea either, but it looks/feels cool, no?" Unfortunately, this isn't a stand-alone film where you can just let go and stop trying to make anything fit, but a companion-piece to a highly character-driven TV series of two seasons' standing.
So, sitting back and letting an almost-rape scene with dreamy music, subtitles, and intense strobing just wash all over you feels odd, to say the least. And as for the actual rape scene... well, we knew it happened, and it was dealt with as delicately as it could be in the series, so what was the point in showing it here? For the amount of closure or additional exposition that's actually provided here for fans of the series, the entire film kind of begs the same question.
Still... the sudden appearance, about 20 minutes in, of a movie version of the series title sequence does make for a very nice few moments. Kind of like the eeriest welcome home you never had...
