Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Maria C — 26 Apr 2009
I know a lot of people were upset that the film was very different then the show, it chose to be serious and scary whereas the quirky joking nature of the show was absent. It's too bad this was the reaction because this is a really great movie. It's got some of the scariest stuff i've ever seen in any film. I specifically love atmosphere and sense of doom the film invokes.
My only regret is that i'd love to see all the footage that lynch shot, which like "the thin red line" takes one of the top spots for the most amount of subplots cut out of a theatrical release.
This film is as scary, brooding and dark as any of lynches recent work but has a plot to back it up. While lynch's more experimental work (and other works like it) often escapes the realm of criticism due to the subjective nature, the viewer often only has a boredom meter on their list of analysis criteria.
This is Lynch's strongest film. It's not a personal film, it's an objective attempt to breach the mainstream and in turn he perfected it. the scenes fit together rather then seem disjointed, yet invokes all the same feelings and cerebral stimulus that any of his less mainstream films achieve.
