Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Max O — 21 Oct 2010
I love Lynch, and I love Twin Peaks, but this movie was very disappointing. Some of it is great: most of the cast does a good job. Chris Isaak and David Bowie show up, both giving memorably Lynchian performances.
Kyle Maclachlan doesn't show up as often as I'd like, but it's not his story, so what can you do? Sheryl Lee is fantastic as Laura, making her a complex character that we can sympathize with.
And Angelo Balamadenti's score is one of his best. That said, this girl who replaced Laura Flynn Boyle as Donna is just no good. I know Boyle was busy, but that's no excuse for casting this person.
There are a lot of scenes that just don't work, and the stuff involving the creamed corn is ridiculous. And keep in mind that I'm saying that about a Lynch film. When I find something too ridiculous in a movie by a guy who's already known for putting bizarre things in his films, you know something's not right.
Lastly, the movie doesn't add all that much to Twin Peaks. It's nice seeing what happened to Laura, but ultimately, we all liked the show because of the people in the town, not her character's murder.
Remove most of those people, and it's just not the same.
