Review of Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) by Tom S — 06 Aug 2007
Pale imitation of the seminal TV series, which fails to cohere.
The John Landis segment gets no stars. Lacking its denoument, it makes no sense at all, and the horrible on-set accident casts a dreaful shadow.
The Spielberg segment gets one star: overlong and cloying sentimental, it adds nothing to the orginal episode.
The Joe Dante episode gets two stars: a strong premise falls apart as the special effects take over. The original was simpler and creepier.
Only the George Miller segment really works, earning four stars. John Lithgow is perfect as the terrified plane passenger, in the role first played by William Shatner (giving rise to a splendid in-joke in a Third Rock episode).
Sadly, the best bit is the pretitles gag.
