Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Kieran F — 20 Oct 2011
If the plot wasn't so...Out of wack this film would be AWESOME.
Its got an interesting story of a virus that wipes out MOST of mankind and the remainder of them must live underground and if they go above ground must where special sanitized suits and be cleaned once re entering the ground.
In a desperate way of find a cure for the virus they send convicted murder James Cole(Bruce Willis) back in time to the source of the virus and a possible cure. James is chosen because of his amazing memory and thusly is sent back in time to see if he can find a cure.
The first time he goes back he fails and begs the scientists to send him back because they sent him to the wrong time originally and they agree to and he goes back. While back he keeps having his Nightmares and can't figure out why.
This is when the plot gets WEIRD. Like I understand the FIRST reason he goes back but the second is when its weird Because he was put in the mental facility in his first he meets a man who's father is the creator of the virus. He then realizes this and try's to stop his father from creating the virus and that the scientists where following the wrong person(the 12 Monkeys company). Okay that makes..SOME SENSE LOL and then the REALLY weird part is how all the visions that Bruce Willis's character was seeing at the beginning of someone dying and the person turns out to be himself in disguise. Now..I know people can remember visions from long ago but if her saw himself DIE...wouldn't he recognize himself latter on? If he keeps seeing his visions would he EVENTUALLY realize that the person was himself? like at first YES it would be hard to figure out cause he's in disguise But..after he puts the disguise ON wouldn't he REALIZE that the person he kept seeing in his nightmares was him??????????????? I just don't get it. That's what makes the plot murky it just is really weird that..he would have nightmares ABOUT HIMSELF and not REALIZE it...Like why it would be like that is BEYOND MY MIND.
If the plot wasn't so Murky I would give this film almost a hundred. The story(All though confusing like I said) is an interesting take on an apocalyptic world. But the plot is kinda murky and is somewhat confusing. I think if they had worked on it and maybe stretched the plot a little bit(Granted it was 2hrs but ALOT of it was spent of Willis being confused by his own Memory and him trying to convince them to send him back) they didn't really work on the Virus part and in all honesty the Ending is REALLY REALLY weird I won't ruin it but when you see it your like WTF???
But that all aside what you have here is a good film by Bruce willis and a(Semi)interesting(All though murky at worst) Plot which makes a good a science fiction film and a REALLY good performance by Willis.
