Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Luke H — 13 Mar 2012
In a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity has been mostly wiped out by a deadly virus, and the remainder live underground, Scientists send criminal James Cole on missions to the past to try and learn the source of the outbreak.
12 Monkeys is an interesting, if confusing science fiction drama about the effects of biological warfare, set through a series of disorienting flashbacks and travels to different periods of the past, as well as an ideological account of activist groups in a postmodern society.
Although 12 Monkeys is a great science fiction film, the continual jumps back and forth, the introduction of hallucinations and flashbacks, make it convoluted and complicated at times, which was frustrating, because I felt that it could easily have been simplified and easier to follow.
It certainly didn't help that Brad Pitt seems to play about 6 completely different characters as opposed to 1 in various stages of his life. I often find that science fiction is an unnecessarily confusing genre, but 12 Monkeys still has all the positive aspects that many sci-fi films enjoy; an interesting and thought-provoking narrative, a wonderfully detailed dystopian landscape, and a bleak realisation of the future.
