Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Nick B — 01 Apr 2012
Catch-22. Nineteen-Eighty Four. A Clockwork Orange. We. Operation:Mindcrime. Brave New World. Akira. Anthem. Battle Royale. Metropolis. I could probably trace back my obsession with dystopian art - and it is genuinely an obsession - right back to to the first time I saw 12 Monkeys, at the tender age of 9. This is the first film I ever loved.
The final scene, where everything comes full circle and all hope is crushed, while Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" hangs angelically over the slow-motion finale, is a top 10 moment in cinema history for me. In terms of the impact it had on me, I'd go as far as to compare it to the final scenes of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Terry Gilliam needs more recognition as one of the few people who's been involved in truly great films in more than one genre.
