Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Malcolm M — 01 Jun 2013
It's a refreshing take on the time-travel genre, full of thematic questions such as "what is reality?", "what constitutes sanity?", and "are memories subjective?". Additionally, Gilliam is a cinematic expert and if you respect good filmmaking in the rawest sense of the word, then you will enjoy this film even more.
Between the original ideas and technical perfection, there would seem to be little room for performances but Pitt and Willis fill that space nicely. Specifically, for Willis this is one of his more emotionally developed roles in all his career.
If there is a flaw with this film, it's the confusing inconsistencies it carries within the plot, which at times become too apparent to ignore.
