What is interesting about 12 Monkeys is that it almost never feels like a science fiction. All the "futuristic" elements are transported in a psychological realm and this makes the film a very compelling experience. As a sci-fi, it might have been less successful, but if works very well as a psychological drama with a dash of surrealism and a delicious narrative structure.
Visually dazzling, beautifully acted and effective "12 Monkeys" represents Terry Gilliam at his very best.
