Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Danny O — 07 Jul 2015
12 Monkeys is a unique and well made science fiction film. The cast is great, Brad Pitt is excellent in an underutilized supporting role. The story is grim and intense, making for a really interesting story.
The writing is very good, and the costume/production design are great. The overall concept is engaging at first, but loses its way towards the middle. It feels like the movie is holding us back from looking into the bigger ideas promised from the start.
The ending brings the jumbled time paradoxes to a surprising and extremely clever finale. The tone and direction of this movie are solid, and there are many interesting ideas mixed with great performances.
Twelve Monkeys gets 4/5 stars (A-).
