Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Chiek E — 23 Jul 2015
An intense mind numbing intelligent time travel sci-fi movie with a fantastic cast. This time travelling role was, in my opinion, the best film role for Bruce Willis yet because it combined brains with brawn.
While the goal of Bruce Willis was to travel back in time to change destiny by preventing the worst biological terrorism ever that wiped out 5 billion people, the important message in the film was ultimately that fate and history cannot be changed.
A fact we must recognised in real life and in the film is that destiny, as determined by our God almighty, are fixed and can never be altered. Our time traveller, Bruce (James Colman) just get caught in the loop of time travelling and become the history that would lead to the predetermined future events and then looping back over and over again like a broken record, never-ending and impossible for even one single bit of history changing event.
Because everything back in the past was done and dusted as all our destinies past present and future have been cast in stone from the beginning of time. The filmed climaxed for one brief tragic moment that the seven-year-old James Cole would witness the 45-year-old James Cole being gunned down.
The rest of the cast was nothing but magnificent. The damsel in distress Madeleine Stowe and the brilliant rising young star Brad Pitt, who played the loony character to perfection. Certainly a match for Jack Nicholson's iconic performance in 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest'.
