Review of Twelve Monkeys (1995) by Tom W — 23 Jul 2015
12 monkeys is an intense mind numbing intelligent time-travel sci-fi movie with a fantastic cast. This time travelling role was, in my opinion, the best film role for Bruce Willis yet because it combined brains with brawn.
While the goal of Bruce Willis was to travel back in time to change destiny by preventing the worst biological terrorism ever that wiped out 5 billion people, the important message in the film was ultimately that destiny and hence history cannot be changed.
A fact we must recognize in our real world also. Can anyone change what our God almighty, has already fixed even before the foundation of the world? Our time traveller, Bruce (James Cole) attempted exactly this foolish endeavor with predictable failure.
He got caught up in the never ending looping of time this has always been part of history already. Like a broken record, he loops back and forward in time endlessly according to the written unchanging script of life but impossible to change one single bit of history.
The filmed climaxed for one brief tragic moment when the seven-year-old James Cole would witness the 45-year-old James Cole being gunned down, which became the never-ending nightmares of the seven-year old James Cole.
He would of course return to this part of his history in furue. The rest of the cast was nothing but magnificent. The damsel in distress Madeleine Stowe and the brilliant rising young star Brad Pitt, who played the loony character to perfection.
A worthy match for Jack Nicholson's iconic performance in 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest' indeed.
