Review of Tusk (2014) by Matt Z — 19 Sep 2014
It is far from a flawless movie. It has its problems for sure. But being a listener of Smith's Smodcast, and being one of the first to hear this story over a year ago, I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised to see this movie go from concept to reality in such a short turn around.
If you listen to Smodcast, and you hear Kevin Smith talk about how he wanted to break structure and have some fun with a goofy concept, it really helps flesh the movie out. Yes when it breaks structure, it's a bit off putting, and the last 2 minutes are kind of dumb, but when you really think about it, this is Smith's most ambitious film, and if he just made the same old shit he's made for the past 20 years, no one would have cared, not even him.
He wanted to do something strange and different, he wanted to disrupt structure and conventional storytelling. Plus... it's not meant to be taken seriously, the whole film is a big gag with multiple pay offs, and Smith wants you to laugh with him.
If anything, it's a Kevin Smith satire on The Human Centipede... and it's hilarious! I also feel like this is Smith's most personal movie. Not so much in the storytelling, or the structure, or the characters, but more in the process of its making.
You really feel his passion for making movies, and making people laugh. You really feel his passion in the movie, and that's why I loved it.
