Review of Tusk (2014) by Michael B — 20 Sep 2014
I have been a big fan of Kevin Smith's work since Clerks. I regularly listen to his podcasts. And I was really, really looking forward to seeing this film. I saw it early Friday on opening day. I loved the idea for the film and thought the trailer looked fantastic! So I was rather disappointed with what it ended up being.
It had a lot of promise for the first half when it had the feeling of a psychological horror film (despite the terrible "not see party" puns). But once Johnny Depp's over-the-top character came I to the story, it felt like a really poor imitation of a Inspector Cleusou remake. The jokes just weren't funny and the horror vibe was ruined. I wish Kevin Smith had simply cast actual Canadians in those roles and played the whole movie straight and not for laughs. Then this quirky story could have been very entertaining instead of just weird.
