Review of Tusk (2014) by Kilo D — 03 Dec 2014
"Tusk" is pretentious, inconsistent, and embarrassing moviemaking. Kevin Smith tries to make this something bizarre and ends up producing a sloppy ninety minutes. The dialogue is funny at times and in Michael Parks hands, quite entertaining; however, the dialogue that makes up most of the movie is too inundated with pop culture references, literature references, overwrought flashback stories, and an overwhelming sense of trying to tap into something provocative and dense only to fail.
And it does not help that Mr. Smith created a batch of characters with few redeemable qualities, and, most importantly, the protagonist is a laughing, apathetic stoner who cheats on his girlfriend and brags about the possibility of getting sexual satisfaction in Canada--and the portraits of Canadians in "Tusk" are simplistic and old and are little more than a feeble attempt by Kevin Smith to create his own little Fargo-esque community and, unfortunately, he winds up making a movie far worse than a half-baked, wannabe-David Lynch picture.
