Review of Tusk (2014) by Kyle A — 29 Sep 2015
This film has parts with potential to be something good, but overall it left the taste of a poor man's Human Centipede in my mouth. There is a mock-Canadian environment as if trying to be like Fargo, but it's just not hitting its' mark anywhere.
I think Kevin Smith needs to get far away from the yes men (and yes-fans) and learn to be humble, before jumping into new projects. Even his classic movies didn't have much of a story to them. People just loved the banter, so he got a pass. The problem is that he tries banter in this movie but it's stale and leads nowhere.
It's not all bad. I liked some of the art direction and camera framing of shots, as well as thought Mr. Depp's make-up looked pretty good, but other than that it's just another one for the steaming pile we call "new Kevin Smith" movies (Jersey Girl, Red State, Cop Out).
With talents like Justin Long and Johnny Depp available, he's wasted their talent, plain and simple. In fact I think he's wasting HIS talent by not having straight-shooters, telling him when something sucks, before it even gets the green-light. I WANT good Kevin Smith movies to happen, but as it is, I kind of want my money back for all the bad blu-rays of his I own, like Randal demanded for money spent on movie tickets, in the Clerks cartoon.
If you're dead set on seeing this, just rent a stream, because speaking as an honest fan, you'll be getting ripped off if you buy this movie unfortunately.
