Review of Tusk (2014) by Stefan D — 11 Jan 2015
There are moments in this film where it really feels like Kevin Smith. Cop Out was just that, and Red State felt like a straight to VOD amateur nightmare. Tusk, however, is the most Smith film since Zack & Miri, but what it doesn't have is the heart of his earlier films (unless you count the cold original ending of Clerks).
Parks is an excellent psycho, Long an excellent douchebag, but the beautifully brutal tone begins to waver on the reveal of the walrus and is well and truly plunged into goofball with the arrival of Guy LaPointe.
From there, it's in the same vein as Dale and Tucker or Buba-Ho Tep. It's daft and gruesome fun, and despite its failings it is an admirably original and independent work.
