Review of Tusk (2014) by Gregory C — 07 Oct 2014
The wait is finally over, and if you're a fan of Kevin Smith and listen to his podcasts then you know exactly what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, then go research it online or ask a Kevin Smith fan about it because it's quite an interesting story.
Now, from the moment of its inception I've been excited about this movie and the potential it had. I'm a huge fan of Kevin Smith, and after seeing the trailer to this film I thought, "Holy Shit, YES!" However, after seeing the movie.
.. well, I was more than a little disappointed. This film had so much potential but for some reason writer and director, Kevin Smith made certain choices that were definitely of the wrong sort, and it severely hurt the movie.
For the most part Tusk was spot on in its horror/comedy genre, almost perfectly balancing its weird mixture of elements. But then fucking Johnny Depp shows up as this weird cartoony detective about halfway through the film and the movie shifts to pure comedy, and from then on out it's an unbalanced mess, with an ending that will have you saying or thinking, "What the fuck.
" However, if you stay until the end of the credits you'll hear a little snippet from one of Kevin Smith's podcasts that sheds some light on the movie and its ending, which might change your mind and/or heart about the movie.
.. or not, and at the very end of the credits is a scene that you might find worth staying for... if you're a fan of Johnny Depp. Despite its annoying and disappointing flaws, the film is original, creative, interesting, creepy, funny, and definitely worth paying to see in the theater, but only if you lower your expectations.
I give Tusk a C+.
