Review of Turtles Forever (2009) by Adnan A — 30 Dec 2009
A great thrill ride for any TMNT fan. The humor and the action are both superb, and it's great to see the characters from the 1987 series again, as well as the interpretation of the Mirage Comics Turtles.
It's too bad that they couldn't get the voice actors from the 1987 series to reprise their roles, however. Aside from that, I have only one major complaint, and that's that this movie does tend to rag on the 1987 Turtles just a bit too much.
In their effort to lampoon the stylistic differences between the light-hearted 1987 show and the darker, grittier 2003 show, the filmmakers ended up portraying the 1987 Turtles as buffoonish, semi-competent, and even cowardly at times.
Now, I'll admit that the 1987 series ultimately plumbed some pretty campy depths, but the Turtles of that series were never anything less than fully committed to combating evil ("Turtles fight with honor!"), and I don't feel they were treated with quite the proper respect here.
But, when all is said and done, this movie is still a pretty fantastic project, and we're lucky that they even bothered to give us something like it.
