Review of Turtles Can Fly (2004) by Jonathan A — 17 Jun 2007
This must be one of the finest films depicting war (which, however, we never really see on screen) out there. There is no attempt to cast a particular political message other than that war is incredibly destructive, no matter who is waging it.
It would be very easy to be sentimental or propogandizing with a film about orphans in the midst of a war zone, but Ghobadi wisely steers away from either of those extremes, resulting in a truly 'powerful' piece of cinema.
Sure, there are times when the film's obviously low budget becomes apparent, and there are some lapses in the plot, but these are all very minor problems.
