Review of Turning Red (2022) by Sweetmirabelle — 28 Mar 2022
As a first generation Canadian of Asian immigrant parents, I can say that the struggles portrayed in this film are true to life. Deep in my soul, I feel that my 13-year old self with all of her energy, her fears, her hopes, and even her cringey pre-teen imaginative fantasies-- is seen, heard, and acknowledged. The film creatively addresses topics related to adolescence and growing up in a real, yet light-hearted way.
I can see this film grow with the young people of today, and becoming even more appreciated far beyond their awkward pre-teen years. For children, the material in this movie may not be fully understood, yet it foreshadows what is to come and normalizes it as a rite of passage. I envision Turning Red being a powerful conversation starter amongst many families.
