Review of Turning Red (2022) by C98C — 11 Mar 2022
Fantastic movie. By far the best animated movie I've ever seen. As someone who is neither Chinese nor Canadian I still find this film so relatable. So reviews claiming the target audience is niche are way off base.
One of the best things about this film was the representation of real genuine human beings. From the animated characters to the actual people behind the movie. The characters were representative of the people you see in every day life—different races, different weights, different styles, and the 13 year old characters actually looked liked real 13 year olds braces and freckles and all! Refreshing to see.
Then I watched the behind the scenes and got to see the people behind the movie were majority Asian and female (AMAZING). So many movies based on certain races or cultures maybe have a handful of that race or culture actually on staff.
I'm so happy this movie was different. This movie deserves to be Pixars highest grossing movie. It is absolutely phenomenal. I don't want to give any spoilers but to see an awkward weird main character who doesn't tone is down is exactly what I wish I could see represented when I was that age.
As a current weird girl who has always been "too much" for others I used to be so self conscious about it. I have grown to love it now but this movie is monumental to see that representated in the media in a positive way.
