Review of Turner & Hooch (1989) by Jack C — 14 Feb 2009
As far as the detective-dog buddy cop genre goes "Turner and Hooch" is top of the pile. To be fair you only have to beat "K-9", which isn't a hard task to do. Here Tom Hanks (at the height of his 'funny' time) plays a neat freak cop who in order to solve a murder becomes partner with the messiest dog in town.
Oh the funnies fly as this mismatched pair attempt to solve the case while also bonding and learning a lot about life and stuff. It's a formulaic film but it is great fun and it also has a great gear change in the final act, turning from easy comedy into quite a dark little cop drama.
Great acting from the two leads and an awesome supporting cast (Reginald VelJohnson AND Craig T. Nelson) mean this is one canine film that won't get put down. It's top of the paws. It's got a lot of bark.
It's brilliant.
