Although it's faint praise to say that a movie is better than its DVD cover, that's certainly the case here. Having said that, this survival horror, torture porn, hotties in Brazil movie never really rises above the average, and ideologically it's screwed.
The film's permeated by that same peculiarly American paranoia and martyrdom that fuels so much contemporary American horror (Hostel etc), and presents the white asshole backpacker characters (3 American, 2 British, 1 Australian) as a heroic coalition fighting the Brazilian 'others' (with an Eastern Euro villain thrown in for good measure on top).
