Review of Turbo (2013) by Orlando O — 11 Dec 2013
Turbo is nothing more but a colorful animation comedy film with underwritten characters in which only kids may enjoy.
Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) is a garden snail that dreams of racing and being the fastest being inspired by the Indianapolis 500 racer champ Guy Gagne. Turbo dwells his daily life, living life slow and miserableness. Until he comes across a couple of street racers and he accidently gets sucked into the supercharger, infusing his DNA with the nitrous oxide. After the accident, Turbo is able to move at a fast speed to beat other racecar drivers. Turbo is noticed by Tito (voiced by Michael Pena) who runs a taco restaurant in a strip mall. Tito also has dreams of being something important too and tries to sign Turbo up to race in the Indianapolis 500.
The plot was creative and has a special meaningful message that kids may enjoy with never giving up on your dreams. Sure, the message is predictable and overused in most family films. It may be charming to the younglings. Although, it may be quite tedious to the adults since it is very dull with the characters. Most of the human characters in the movie were underwritten and making the movie boring.
The voice talent of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Snoop Dogg, Maya Rudolph, Michelle Rodriguez and Samuel L. Jackson were not really special to their characters. They are all great actors and actresses in general. It may seem like an easy paycheck for the voice cast to read off the script.
The colorful animation work was fun to look at but it is not enough to continue watching, as the characters were uninteresting. For a family movie, it may be boring for the older crowd. It is a terrible computer animated.
